Mobile phones contain many reusable precious metals and recyclable glass. They also contain toxic substances that cannot be disposed of properly if the phones are simply thrown into a regular trash can.

The main cause of this disengagement is widespread ignorance. Indeed, three out of four people have never even thought about recycling their obsolete devices. Even more telling, almost half of those interviewed admitted to not knowing that it was possible to recycle these end-of-life objects. However, it would be more than beneficial for the environment to remedy this state of affairs. For example, according to Nokia, if each of the three billion people who own phones recycled just one of their used devices, it would save 240,000 tons of raw materials. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions generated, it would also be equivalent to removing 4 million cars from the roads.
